A natural gas leak in a San Francisco neighborhood caused an explosion and huge fire that destroyed five buildings and caused panic on the streets as people were trying to escape the fire.

Firefighters extinguished the fire three hours after a natural gas line was struck by construction workers sparkling a powerful blast and towering flames. According to the police, the company that was doing the digging had permission. The crew of workers was found safe but five workers were missing.

The nearby buildings including a hospital and apartments were evacuated. Vehicles were rerouted as authorities cordoned off the neighborhood.

Five buildings were damaged by the flames including the building housing one of the city’s “best-of” restaurants Hong Kong Lounge II beloved by tourists and the students University of San Francisco.
