French media reports informed about the death of fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld. He was 85.

Lagerfeld, who was Chanel’s creative director died this morning at the American Hospital in Paris after being admitted the day before.

He had missed two of Chanel’s haute couture shows in Paris in January because he was “tired”, according to the statement released the fashion house. Director of Chanel’s creative studio Virginie Viard represented him on the shows.

Karl Lagerfeld was also a creative director for Fendi and his own fashion brand. He had been presiding over the Chanel fashion house for over three decades after being offered the position of a creative director in 1985.

Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn the news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing today.”

No confirmations about the cause of his death have been released.
