Nathan Sutherland, 36, a nurse in a long-term health care facility in Arizona, pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting an intellectually disabled patient who later gave birth in the facility.
The nurse was charged with rape of the 29-year-old woman at the Hacienda HealthCare facility after she shocked her parents and caregivers by bringing into the world a baby.
The trial lasted no longer than a few minutes. Sutherland stated his name and date of birth before pleading not guilty to sexual assault and abuse of a vulnerable adult.
The caregivers stated earlier they were not aware of the victim’s pregnancy. According to the court records, her last physical examination was performed in April last year.
According to the results of the DNA expertise of all male employees at the Hacienda HealthCare facility, only Sutherland’s DNA matched a sample from the baby. The defendant’s attorney stated earlier that there is no direct evidence confirming that Sutherland raped the victim.
