Pavel Shapovalov, accused of attempted hijacking of the Aeroflot aircraft, demanded a change of course to Afghanistan and claimed that he was allegedly involved in the September 11 attacks in the U.S., according to the case file.
On Wednesday, the Khanty-Mansiysk District Court is considering a motion to impose a preventive measure on a passenger suspected of capturing the Surgut-Moscow flight.
“The flight attendant of the Surgut-Moscow flight said Shapovalov said he was involved in the September 11 attacks, asking to change course to Afghanistan,” Judge Rinat Akhmetov read an excerpt from the case file.
The representative of the investigation asked to put Shapovalov in custody for two months, “given the resonance and public safety of the act. In turn, the representative of the defense said that he insisted on choosing house arrest or a subscription not to leave, as the accused is a resident of the district. Shapovalov himself refused to give explanations.
On Tuesday, an Aeroflot plane, flying SU151515 Surgut-Moscow, made a forced landing at the airport in Khanty-Mansiysk. According to the data of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, during the flight the man tried to break into the cockpit and demanded to change the course of the flight, as it is supposed, to Afghanistan. He was detained and the investigators initiated a case under the article “The hijacking of an aircraft involving a threat of violence”.
Later, the Investigative Committee published a video of the interrogation of the suspect in the seizure of the flight, it was a resident of the village of Ugut, Surgut district, Pavel Shapovalov, who confessed that he “did not have to fly” to Afghanistan. In addition, during the interrogation, the suspect stated that he had not brought weapons and any stabbing and cutting objects into the plane, nor had he used drugs and psychotropic substances before the flight.
On Wednesday, the Ural Transport Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation informed RIA Novosti that in the near future the investigators intend to send a petition to the Khanty-Mansiysk District Court to detain Shapovalov. The Investigative Committee noted that he had been assigned a psychological and psychiatric examination.
