Valentine’s Day this year will not be the same as before, as Sweethearts heart-shaped sweets will not appear on store shelves for the first time in the last hundred years.

Spangler Candy Co. bought Sweethearts and Necco Wafers in September 2018 after Necco was at a loss but could not make the billions of candy hearts that are needed to meet demand.

After a year of lull, the main products of the lovers’ day will appear on the shelves in 2020.

Until the original candies are available, Brach’s and Sour Patch Kids have made their own versions.
