According to the local officials, 20 people have been killed and dozens injured as two bombs blast at a Roman Catholic cathedral in Jolo, Philippines.
The first explosion happened while celebrating Sunday Mass in Jolo island. There is high level of Islamist militant activity in this region of the country. Especially, this island has been a base for Abu Sayyaf militants for a long time.
The second bomb exploded later in the car park, according to the sources at place. However, no any group has yet taken the responsibility of the attack.
As local authorities stated the first blast happened at 08:45 local time (00:45 GMT) inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This church has been already hit by bombs in the past. The second bomb blasted outside of the church building.
It was reported of 27 dead, but later the death toll has been lowered to 20, as double counting occurred earlier. Most of those suffered are civilians.
“We will use full force of the law to bring to justice the perpetrators behind this accident”, commented Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana calling the attack a “heinous act”.
He urged local population to cooperate with the authorities in order prevent from such attacks in the future.
