Striving to get rid of heavy traffic congestion, the government has finally agreed to cancel payment in public transport from March 2020. According to the stats, the roads of Luxembourg are loaded by thousands of people from near countries who come to work every day. Besides endless traffic jam that should disappear, environmental conditions are expected to show better results, too.
The changes will apply to rail transport (commuter trains), buses and trams. But the authorities have not decided whether to make free travel in the 1st and 2nd class trains or not.
Thus, Luxembourg with about 600 thousand people living there will become the first country in the world with free public transport. The costs of the project is estimated at 41 million euros per year.
